Hello, my name is Kristin and I have an addiction, it’s called, Pinterest“.   If you don’t have a Pinterest account you need one. Let’s be addicts together.

Pinterest is a community of overachieving women (and I’m sure men too). Pinterest is where you can find links from all over the web which people post and re-pin making it a great place to find new recipes and inspiration. Pinterest also drives me batty. See, lots of recipes are pinned with catch phrases: “healthy”, “good for you”, “homemade”, yet when the recipe is clicked, you find it’s nothing more than processed food ingredients.  Oh the frustration.

I bring you chocolate covered bananas on a cute little stick. The ingredients are simple, real, and super nourishing! Yes, chocolate can be nourishing.

Last week I found a recipe for chocolate dipped bananas. The thought made me drool.   Good thing I spend most my day with a three-year-old and teething toddler, drooling is considered a completely acceptable behavior.  I clicked through to the recipe only to find, yup, processed ingredients. Darn.

Why destroy a perfectly nourishing banana by dipping it in a bunch of chemicals? I was still drooling over the idea of chocolate dipped bananas, so I set out to make my own. I knew I could  make a tasty and nourishing version. We are talking about chocolate here, how could it be anything less than nourishing and tasty?

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Cut the bananas in half and carefully insert one popsicle stick (or straw) in bottom of each banana. Place each banana on a tray that is lined with parchment paper and place in the freezer.
  • Keep in the freezer until they are frozen, a couple hours.
  • While the bananas are freezing, mix the chocolate dip. Whisk until all the ingredients are smooth. This can sit on the counter while you wait for your bananas to finish freezing.
  • Once your bananas are frozen take them out of the freezer. Pour the Chocolate Dip into a mug or large measuring cup (like this). Dip each banana into the chocolate dip. When the coconut oil comes into contact with the frozen banana it will cause the chocolate dip to instantly harden creating a chocolate shell. Pretty awesome chemistry. If you desire toppings, now is the time to sprinkle nuts or shredded coconut over the chocolate.
  • Lay your bananas on the parchment paper once the chocolate hardens.
  • Keep banana pops frozen.
  • Note: If you desire a thick chocolate shell, follow the steps above, don’t add extra toppings just yet. Place the chocolate bananas back in the freezer, freeze. Remove from the freezer and repeat with the dipping process, add toppings as desired.

  1. I am a Pinterest addict too haha. This recipe reminds me of working at Dairy Queen as a teen, I used to make these when business was slow. They were delicious! Years later I heard they put it on the menu for a time. But they don’t make the buster bars or dilly bars or banana pops fresh anymore and I can definitely notice the rancid nuts etc. Yuck!
So excited to make these at home! Thanks!

    1. Lol, Bethany, Pinterest addicts unite ;). I used to be a huge Dairy Queen addict, too. I had no idea they sold buster/dilly bars–I would have been all over them! I’m so thankful for better-tasting homemade versions.

  2. Kristin, this is fabulous! Thank you for sharing! I recently stumbled upon your blog via a friend’s repost on Facebook of your homemade mineral foundation. I was instantly intrigued and clicked on the post and ever since I have been glued to my computer for days reading all of your posts!!! I have been on a quest myself to feed my family more REAL food especially since I have a 3 year old and I want him to have better eating habits than I did years ago. Your blog is amazing and I am absolutely loving it! Keep it coming! 🙂

    1. Aww, Shelby. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m blessed you found Live Simply. It’s so encouraging to hear of other families making this same journey. I was just taking new photos for this old post too. 🙂

  3. My kids have bee asking for chocolate covered bananas for weeks. I hadn’t found a recipe that looked good, but this one does! Thanks!

  4. Mmm…finally made these today and they were a hit! I’ve had the bananas in the freezer for about a week and finally got around to doing this with the boys today. This is a fun one to do with the kids because they had fun dipping their bananas and it’s only a few ingredients so it didn’t take very long, which was great because my control freak self can only take so much “help”. 🙂 I also modified it a bit – I doubled the recipe and tried using NuNaturals stevia instead of honey, but it really needed the flavor and sweetness of the honey to offset the bitterness of the cocoa powder. I ended up adding two tablespoons to the batch, which was perfect in addition to the stevia I had in there. Peanut butter. I had to try it. I melted some and spread it on the bananas and then dipped them in the chocolate after refreezing them a bit first. Oh…my…goodness. Yes, it was delicious. Next time I think I’ll try adding the peanut butter to the mixture instead and see how that works. Also, I’m going to try this with banana slices with a dollop of peanut butter on top. Oh, yeah! 🙂
Is there a word limit on comments, ’cause I think I may have reached it! 🙂

  6. Hey Kristin….I am making these as I type…I don’t have parchment bags…where do you get them? Are they expensive? Hoping just ziplock bags work for this go around.
