Chocolate Banana Protein Smoothie. SO GOOD!

Certain foods bring back nostalgic childhood memories.

Growing up, Friday night always equaled a large cheese delivery pizza.  Each slice was enjoyed watching an episode of Full House. Who’s with me?

Every Sunday, pot-roast was carefully cooked and served on my great-grandmother’s china. Carrots and unusually-large potatoes drowning in pot-roast drippings sat next to the shredded meat.

School mornings were busy and breakfast had to be quick. Oatmeal and hard-boiled eggs ritually graced our kitchen counter. The steamy oatmeal topped with brown sugar crystals and an indulgent amount of milk was served in small, white bowls. The eggs were sprinkled with table salt and cracked pepper.

My mom spent the weekends working. My dad and I spent our days at Home Depot and playing in the garage. Weekends with my dad also meant peanut butter, white sugar, and bananas! No baking was involved, just big ol’ spoons covered in chunky peanut butter topped with white sugar. Bananas always followed the no-bake peanut butter treat.

My childhood memories shape my food choices as an adult.

Pizza night has carried through to adulthood, surviving: overseas living, vacations, and babies. Today, our pizza consists of homemade dough, my simple sauce, and lots of cheese and toppings.

The thought of a pot-roast cooking for hours in a broth-splattered crock-pot still makes me giddy. In honor of my mom, pot-roast is still served on china with drowning carrots and potatoes.

Oatmeal and peanut butter still draw me in!

The warm creaminess of oatmeal flavored with a bit of golden honey and fruit, covered in raw milk puts a huge smile on my face.

Peanut butter is always close to my heart and taste-buds. I even blogged about the very act of making peanut butter and how to make the perfect homemade peanut butter cookies. Thanks Dad for the sweet memories!

On Father’s Day peanut butter must be served! In honor of you, Dad!

Smoothies aren’t the first thing that come to mind when I think of a “dad meal”, but this smoothie is here to change all the stigma. Made with hearty peanut butter, cocoa powder, creamy yogurt, ripe bananas, and the secret ingredient- Bob’s Red Mill Scottish Oatmeal– this is a smoothie worthy of Dad.

I realize adding oatmeal to a smoothie isn’t conventional, but conventional doesn’t always equal delicious. This recipe calls for Scottish Oatmeal, often called “The Original Oatmeal”, as the oats are ground vs. rolled or cut. The oats are very fine, almost like flour, making a blend-able solution to adding oatmeal and protein to smoothies.

Let’s make Dad a smoothie and celebrate Dad the right way, with a Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie.  Happy Father’s Day, Dad! I raise this smoothie to you.
