2016 Note: Since this post was originally published, I’ve learned a lot about making homemade products, including the safety side of ingredients. While this recipe is extremely gentle and luxurious, and many folks have loved this body wash, it must be used very, very quickly due to the coconut milk. This is a fun DIY to make and freeze, and pull out in a small batches to use “in the moment.” You can find my current body wash recipe over here.

Notes

This post was first published back in 2013 as I was just learning how to DIY in my bathroom. Since that time I’ve learned a lot about making homemade products, including the safety side of ingredients. While this recipe is extremely gentle and luxurious, and many folks have loved this body wash, it must be used very, very quickly due to the coconut milk. 1. Hello,
I have 2 questions for you if you can help-
Could I use fresh goat milk instead of coconut milk
Do you think adding a preservative like Optiphin would help for soap to last longer

    1. Hey Stella, Do you mean dairy cream and milk, or coconut cream and milk? If dairy, I wouldn’t recommend that. If it’s coconut cream and milk, the product will still spoil as noted in the recipe.

  2. Hi there 🙂 I know this is an old post but vitamin E is not a “natural preservative”
it is however used to help extend the life as oils going rancid quickly. I know the
vitamin E thing is used liberally on line but does not prevent growth of bacteria
mold that quickly grows when either water comes into contact with product or
it simply becomes contaminated from germs. I really encourage people to do some research before giving advise – people can get really sick from bacteria that can
grow – especially if theres a cut on the skin. I love all of the health blogs but wish
more accurate advise is given. I hope my comment isn’t taken with any insult
as those are not my intensions 🙂

    1. Hey Dee, Yes, thank you for sharing. This is an old comment with misguided advice (which I no longer advise), so I’ll make sure it’s deleted. Thanks for catching this!

  3. Hi! I cant wait to try your body wash. It sounds lovely! I see that substituting water for the milk will extend shelf life, but it does cancel out the “milk” portion. Do you think adding powdered milk will have the same effect?

    1. Hey Shavon, I’m sorry your comment was skipped! I’m just now seeing this. I’m not sure about adding powdered milk, but it’s worth a shot. I would still refrigerate the body wash.

  4. Soap, even castile, is so drying to my skin. I’ve used so many versions of diy body washes with it. But still dry and itchy. The other day, I was thinking, “wait. what if I don’t use ANY soap, just honey and such to bathe?” I mean, I’ve been using vinegar and water for months for deodorant and have no odor at all. I researched and there is some real evidence that soap isn’t needed at all to get our skin clean. !!! What do you think? I’m trying this recipe without the castile and see how it goes. Seriously, I love all your posts, thanks for you. 🙂

  5. I am not getting any suds with this recipe. I tried doubling the amount of glycerin, and it makes the overall body wash thicker, but still hardly any suds. Am I just expecting too much? I know it won’t suds like a SLS product, but should there be practically no suds at all? Thanks so much, love your site!!!

  6. Hello Kristen. Thanks for all you do to help keep our world safe from

the toxic chemicals used in many products. I’ve mad your hand soap which I really like and today made the laundry detergent recipe. When I came across the body wash, I was excited. I do love the smell of coconut lime verbena. Would this work in your recipe?
