Today’s food chat isn’t so much about a recipe, but an idea that’s been saving our mornings.
It seems like “saving our mornings” has been a major priority around here lately. Please tell me I’m not the only one who struggles with conquering the mornings?! Mornings were hard enough when it was just me and Dustin trying to get ready for the day, but now we have two kids and two dogs. I’m still waiting for the “it gets easier” thought to become a reality when it comes to our morning routine. Maybe in eighteen years?
Let’s chat about one more breakfast food that’s been saving our mornings, making it possible for us to enjoy a healthy and wholesome breakfast without the added pressure to make something in the kitchen at 7am, or the rushed desire to swing by a coffee shop or drive-thru.
Fruit and Yogurt Cups are definitely the easiest breakfast we enjoy throughout the week. These cups only require two basic ingredients: fruit and yogurt! Okay, and mason jars. So two ingredients and a few special kitchen jars.
As I mentioned, Fruit and Yogurt Cups aren’t so much a recipe that must be precisely followed. These cups are more of a simple idea that involves layering the two ingredients one after the other to create a parfait-like breakfast. Simple right?!
Don’t let the simplicity of this breakfast fool you into thinking these cups are boring or lack flavor. Oh my, friend, Fruit and Yogurt Cups are a lot of things–easy, simple, delicious, wholesome, nourishing, make-ahead–but certainly not boring.
Once the cups are prepped (which takes about ten minutes), I like to store them in the fridge overnight, or a few days, before enjoying them. Oh yes, did I mention these cups are the ultimate make-ahead breakfast? Hence the “saving our mornings” idea!
Before enjoying the cups we top them with muesli or granola, nuts or seeds, or an Ancient Grain and Super Seed Blend from Trader Joe’s (that stuff is soooo good!!). Sometimes we also drizzle a bit of honey over the top of the cups. The end result is a quick and easy breakfast that’s filling, nourishing, and packed full of natural flavor.
While I usually keep our Fruit and Yogurt Cup ingredients simple, with plain whole milk yogurt and a medley of seasonal fruit (usually whatever is on sale at the store), there are multiple ways to customize these cups based on your flavor preference. In fact, your family members may want to get involved on a Sunday evening making a couple of their own cups for the upcoming week. Let’s chat about how to customize Fruit and Yogurt Cups…
How to Make Your Own Fruit and Yogurt Cups
First, decide what kind of fruit you’re going to add to your Fruit and Yogurt Cups. Since these cups are a make-ahead breakfast (although they are also simple enough to prepare and enjoy on the spot), think about fruit that won’t brown or quickly rot. Fruit that gets mushy or easily bruises, like peaches and pears, aren’t good choices for these cups. Berries, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, mango, cherries, and apples (tossed with a bit of lemon juice) are my favorite fruit choices. I like to use a medley of fruit, but just one single fruit, like blueberries, will also work in the cups. For 4- 8 ounce yogurt cups, I use about 1- 1 1/4 cups of chopped fruit.
I usually stick with fresh fruit, but frozen fruit will also work in these cups. The frozen fruit will melt in the fridge, so it provides extra juiciness to the cups (if you’re used to fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt cups from the store, you may love the frozen fruit option).
Sometimes I’ll add some chopped fresh mint leaves to my fruit mixture to spice up the fruit.
I recommend sticking with plain whole milk yogurt for these cups. Purchasing a large tub (the 32 ounce tub) is the most economical option. Two of my go-to brands are Stonyfield (specifically the 100% grass-fed yogurt) and Seven Stars.
If you’re just not into the tangy flavor of plain yogurt (it took me a while to get used to this yogurt), I recommend adding a bit of vanilla extract or 1-2 scraped vanilla beans, and a bit of honey or maple syrup. The amount you add will depend on your taste preference. Alternatively, you may also drizzle honey or maple syrup over the cups before enjoying. Flavoring your yogurt at home will allow you to control the amount of sugar and the number of ingredients in your cups.
I recommend starting out with 1- 1 1/2 cups of yogurt for 4- 8ounce jars.
Make-Ahead Fruit and Yogurt Cups
- peeled and chopped fruit such as: berries, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, mango, cherries, and apples tossed with a bit of lemon juice. (about 1-1 1/4 cups)
- 1 1/2 plain whole milk yogurt
- 8 ounce jars
Add a few tablespoons of fruit to the bottom of your mason jars, then proceed with the yogurt, and finally more fruit. The number of layers you create is totally up to you, based on how "meaty" you'd like your Fruit and Yogurt Cups. I recommend leaving a bit of room on the top of the yogurt cups so you can add granola, muesli, or nuts/seeds before enjoying. Seal the jars.
Store the Fruit and Yogurt Cups in the fridge for up to 3 days (or longer, think about the lifespan of your fruit).
To enjoy, top the cups with granola, muesli, nuts/seeds, and/or a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.

If you’re dairy-free, look for a dairy-free plain yogurt option, like coconut or almond yogurt.
