DIY Hanging Produce Basket for all your fruit and it only costs pennies to make!!

I’m going to be honest with you, my produce tends to lay sprawled out on my counter in various places.

There is no order, just chaos when it comes to fruits and vegetables in my house. Here’s how it usually works; I come home with a bag full of fresh produce and I empty said bag onto the counter. Since my non-refrigerated produce has no home I leave it on the counter, usually tucked off to the side.

A week (or two… or three) pass and I find myself ready to tackle the clutter that has been building up in my kitchen. As I’m sorting through junk mail and random what-nots, I’m hit smack dab in the face with the smell of an overripe – as in, way overripe – banana. Off to the compost bin it goes.

You see, I have come to the conclusion that my produce needs order. A bowl on the counter would work but something more in my face would do better. This DIY hanging produce basket is super easy. If you have access to a drill gun and know how to tie a knot, your produce will be hanging from the ceiling in no time.

Vintage jelly molds are a dime a dozen to come by in thrift stores, I found mine for $1. If you have no such luck at thrift stores, try Etsy or a local antique store. Mine shows some sign of age but nothing too bad. Had it been too worn down looking, I would have given it a few coats of spray paint.

For the string, I used paracord I found at a craft store for less than $2. A metal ring can be found at a home improvement store.

Now my produce has a proper place in the kitchen which will hopefully mean less wasted produce.

Items
  • Jelly mold
  • Paracord (like this)
  • Metal ring
  • Drill gun
  • Small drill bit (mine was 3/32″)
Instructions
  1. Start by measuring and marking four holes evenly around the perimeter of the jelly mold.
  2. Slowly drill into the jelly mold at the marks you made.
  3. Cut two even strands of the paracord twice that length you want your produce basket to hang. I wanted mine to hang two feet down, so I cut two strands at four feet each.
  4. Fold the paracord in half and feed the metal ring through to the center. Tie a knot in the paracord to secure the ring.
  5. Now you should have four strands of the paracord. Feed one strand into one of the holes you drilled. Secure it with a knot. Repeat this with the other three strands.
  6. Finally, secure your produce basket to the ceiling or the bottom of a cabinet by drilling into a wall stud or using a heavy-duty anchor.

Tips to Remember:

1. If your jelly mold has a hanging clip attached, gently remove it pliers. It shouldn’t take much force. Once mine was removed, I used the hole it left instead of drilling an additional one.

2. Your paracord may fray a bit while feeding it through the drilled holes. After tying your knot to secure the string, trim the frayed excess with scissors.
