While our family has been on a journey to cut out processed food and return to real food for a few years now, it wasn’t until a year ago, I began to take a look at more than just what we were putting in our mouths, but also on our skin.
I never really gave the lotions, toothpastes, lip balms, and deodorants I was using on my skin much thought, let alone my children’s skin. I knew the wonderful smelling rose deodorant concoction I daily rolled under my arms was laden with all sorts of unpronounceable ingredients, but since I only used it externally, on my skin, it must be okay.
Sure, I had read the warnings about many of the ingredients in my favorite personal care products, ingredients like…
Phthalates and Parabens: ingredients which have been banned in Europe for nearly 10 years . Both are linked to cancers such as breast cancer.
Imidazolidinyl Urea and DMDM Hydantoin: commonly found in skin and hair products and antiperspirants. Ready to be really grossed out? These are derivatives of formaldehyde! Yuck! Who wants to lather a bunch of formaldehyde on their arms? These can cause many issues such as: headaches, asthma, fatigue, joint pain, and the list goes on.
Propylene Glycol: Most commonly found in deodorants. Also an active ingredient in antifreeze. Workers who work around this chemical must wear protective gear for their hands and eyes, however, the FDA deems it safe for use personal care products.
Triclosan: considered to be a pesticide and extremely toxic. Widely found in toothpastes and household cleaners.
While I knew these chemicals existed in the products that lined our bathroom cabinets, I didn’t think they caused any harm to my family.
I was so wrong!
I began to do a lot of reading about our skin, last year. The more I read, the more I was convinced I couldn’t continue to use products that contained such harmful chemicals and especially on my children.
Did you know? It only takes 26 seconds for the chemicals in your personal skin care products to enter your bloodstream!
This fact alone scared me!
I cleaned out our bathrooms, reading the labels of each product we used. Each product contained long lists of unpronounceable ingredients. Just like with packaged “natural” foods, I was amazed to find many of the “natural” soaps and toothpastes I bought in confidence were some of the worst offenders!
I knew there must be a better way! A better way to care for my family without such harsh chemicals entering our bloodstreams on a daily basis.
I decided to start trying a local brand called Honeybee, which my food co-op regularly carried. I was excited to learn that each product in the Honeybee line is made with REAL pronounceable ingredients, many of which you probably already enjoy in your kitchen (ingredients that are safe in your bloodstream). Many of the ingredients are also organic and some of the products contain raw honey straight from the owners own bee hives. I started using the Honeybee Honey Oatmeal Bar Soap in the shower and on my kids. I loved it! I felt clean and chemical free!
Since that bar soap, our family has cleaned house, getting rid of most of the chemical-laden products which once graced our bathroom shelves. Today we enjoy soap, lip balms, magnesium lotion, toothpaste, and more from the Honeybee line of products. Check out more of the Honeybee products and how to order, here.
I am excited to share with you a chance to win some of the great products from Honeybee, in Live Simply’s Honeybee Giveaway!
